The scene was later turned into a political allegory by referring to the swan as Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt, protecting Holland against the Enemy.” … COMMENT: I realize this is a swan rather than a goose. As well, the pugnacious attitude of the swan as it defends its nest does not seem appropriate. Nevertheless, there is something about the obdurate stance of the bird in this painting, confronting as it does a larger foe, that reminds me of the stance of the antisocial personality. The antisocial personality ‘bucks the tide’ of public opinion and societal expectations all his life. His nest eggs, more likely than not stolen from others whom he may have murdered to be on the safe side, is always at risk of discovery and looting by law enforcement, which works not for an Utopian ideal dear to the antisocial personality, but rather for the ‘common good’ as it manifests in the Now.
