INTRODUCTION
Dear Ones,
This is about a walk at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains, and about how the Songbirds warned me that a Mountain Lion was stalking me.
The trouble with Mountain Lion lingo is that they, like most predators, talk very, very quietly.
I guess the Songbirds, of necessity, have extra sharp ears. I guess they like me. If they did not, I figure they wouldn’t warn me about the approach of apex predators.
On the other hand, they are far from being at an advantage with regard to size. It is understandable to me that they try hard to assuage the bad tempers of the apex predators, especially in instances where they help out a primate such as I.

SUMMARY OF THE VIDEO
“The Songbirds That Saved Me”
By Alice B. Clagett
The video clip that starts here is uncut.
I had just heard a ‘leap, leap’ sound
from near the rock formation top left.
Mountain Lion [sneakily, quietly]: I will come
down the mountain right now. I will eat her all up.
Father Mountain Lion [far away, on the high
mountain behind this hill – prompting]:
RIGHT! You will eat her all up.
Scrub Jay: Right, RIGHT!
[and simultaneously to Alice]: Watch OUT!
Mountain Lion [quizzically]: O-KAY! Okay.
So I plan to eat you ALL up RIGHT NOW.
Father Mountain Lion [prompting]:
So what if I do that!
Were those warning shots? Who from, I wonder?!
Or maybe a truck on the bridge?
Bird: LOOK OUT! They’re RIGHT OVER THERE.
Mountain Lion [playfully]: What’s her name?
Father Mountain Lion: Her name is Alice.
Two Songbirds are concerned that the
Mountain Lions know my name. They say
the Mountain Lions say she should keep
her name secret.
Mountain Lion [playfully]:
We’re going to eat Alice. We’re going to eat Alice.
Songbird [mockingly]: SHE’S quite big!
Mountain Lion [playfully]: We’re going to eat her
great big body up. That’s what we’re going to do.
Songbird or Cricket?: Tell her about that backpack.
They won’t eat her if she has that backpack on.
They won’t eat her if she has that backpack on.
Tell her to tell them about that BACK-pack.
Mountain Lion: Okay. She has a backpack on.
Scrub Jay to Mountain Lion: RIGHT!
Mountain Lion [pensively]:
Right. RIGHT. What does that backpack mean?
My Mother told me not to eat anyone with a
BACK-pack. It might be right difficult to gulp them
down because the backpack gets in the way.
House Finch: Right, Right, RI-I-I-IGHT!
Mountain Lion: J-s-s Christ,
What am I hunting for?
Scrub Jay: Right, RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT!
Alice [whispering]: There’s a Mountain Lion
right over there! Right there! Young one.
Mountain Lion: I am NOT a young one!
I am a BIG boy! YES, I AM.
I am really big and tall and handsome.
Father Mountain Lion [pleased]: I’ll be.
That’ll be the way My Son talks.
My Son is talking very well.
Mountain Lion [gratefully]: Father, THANK you
very much for that comment.
Alice to Readers: It’s a girl Mountain Lion. She said, ‘My
Momma told me never to attack a hiker with a backpack.’
Thank goodness I have my backpack on, huh?
Father Mountain Lion [pleased]: No, it’s not.
It’s not a GIRL Mountain Lion.
It is my grown-up, handsome-as-my-SELF SON!
Alice to Readers (speaking inaccurately): It’s a young
girl Mountain Lion over there.
Alice to Readers: Who warned me was one of the
Songbirds.
Alice to Songbirds: Thank you, Songbirds.
Father Mountain Lion [gruffly]: I DON’T thank you.
Alice to Songbirds: Thank you, Songbirds …
Thank you, thank you, THANK you!
Songbirds: STOP that! Stop that!
Alice to Songbirds: Thank you, thank you, THANK you,
thank you!
Alice to Songbirds: Good, good, good, good day!
GOOD day! THANK you, Songbirds!
Alice to Songbird: Thank YOU, [illegible] Bird.
Alice to Readers: THAT one. I don’t know if you
saw it. It was right here?
Alice to Readers: It said, “It was ME!”
House Finch: IT didn’t do that much!
Alice to the other Bird: Thank you!
Alice to this other Bird: Where did you go?
House Finch [to the left, melodically]: RIGHT here!
Another Songbird: Very good!
Scrub Jay: I helped too!
Songbirds are expressing that they did NOT help
me. They are hoping the Mountain Lions will not
be angry with them.
Alice to Readers (continuing): … you can’t see it very well.
It’s very good at camouflaging itself.
House Finch [laughing]: It WASN’T THAT Bird!
It was the House Finch!
Other Songbirds aver that this is so.
Father Mountain Lion [repeating]: It wasn’t THAT
Bird. It was the silly old House Finch.
I’ll re-MEM-ber that thing.
[Alice: Uh-oh! I pray that brave House Finch will be
safe and blessed with all the very best blessings!]
Alice to Readers: It’s right here, the Bird
that saved me, but …
Alice to Scrub Jay: Thank you! Such a good
camouflager!
Alice to Readers: There it is!
Alice to Scrub Jay: Thank you, beautiful Bird!
Alice to Scrub Jay (continuing): Thank you
very much! SUCH a good Bird!
Thank you! Thank you!
House Finch to another House Finch [tittering]:
She thinks it saved her! ‘Thank you very much!’
Alice to Scrub Jay: Anything I can do for you,
just let me know! Okay?
Scrub Jay to Alice: Ri-i-i-ight!

Here is where I got the first warning about the
Mountain Lion, on the trail that heads south
from the Paramount Ranch Ranger Station,
along the eastern side of Medea Creek.

The reddish color of the overhanging Oak Tree
branches somehow boded the approach of trouble.
