She’d a mom she loved but couldn’t live with
. . . . . . and a dad she lived with but couldn’t love.

At 18, through the grace of God, mainly,
. . . . . . her teachers gave her
. . . . . . . . . . . . a high school diploma.

Two weeks later
. . . . . . she flew into
. . . . . . . . . . . . the brawny arms
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . of the Army
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . who would teach her to cook.

She left last month for Germany,
. . . . . . or so they say.
Really, we don’t know where she is.

But the heart of this poet knows for sure
. . . . . . that the youth of this land
. . . . . . . . . . . . are but grist in the mill
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . of our President’s
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . o’erarching ambition.

The world is waiting to see
. . . . . . more than John Wayne
. . . . . . at the helm of a nation
. . . . . . full of good people
. . . . . . . . . . . . who don’t know what to do.

Dear ones,
. . . . . . pray for peace in this land
. . . . . . pray for tolerance of all faiths
. . . . . . . . . . . . of all who feel that money isn’t everything.

May we love our neighbors and all nations.

May we find a friend in Jesus
. . . . . . and a friend in Mohammed too.

May Iraq forgive us our trespasses.

May we forgive ourselves this mayhem,

. . . . . . and fill our lives
. . . . . . . . . . . . and the lives of our children
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . now and forever
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . with peace.
