. . . THE FAR HIMALAYAS
. . . A Poem by Alice B. Clagett
. . . 9 May 2017
They call it a ‘social trail’
That means
. . . Before the Park Service
. . . . . . got wind of it
. . . We hikers knew
. . . . . . the San Fernando Valley
. . . . . . trail to the Himalayas
Here it is!
. . . Sparkling with dust
. . . . . . lizard living
. . . . . . . . . flower guzzling
. . . . . . . . . . . . up tilting tiding
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . of Then
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . remarkable
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Here. Now
One third of the way up,
. . . A vintage sport car
. . . . . . bit the dust nose first
. . . . . . . . . out of which
. . . . . . . . . . . . honey bees spew
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . aborted wonder
Move on, or else!
Twice again that far I found
. . . Faeries flock
. . . . . . to my Hurrah
Faeries, as I recall,
. . . keep the Book of Song
. . . . . . for humankind
If you want to meet one
. . . — or most likely, many —
. . . . . . Sing something new
. . . . . . . . . Something no one’s heard before
Then, when the mountain’s climbed
. . . You’ll be remembered
. . . . . . as few are, anywhere
. . . . . . . . . in a place so different
. . . . . . . . . . . . from that we tread
it has no name
. . . but the name we give it
. . . . . . and the song
. . . . . . . . . with which we shape it

. . . . .
In love, light and joy,
I Am of the Stars
