Two more Ravens had just flown swiftly and expertly past, on a refreshing breeze, disappearing in the direction of Sandstone Peak. As they riveted past, far above me, they conversed with me about a dead ‘Person’ on the other side of the crag. I smelled a faint odor of something that had died.

Ravens think they are Persons, and I am a Person, and Mountain Lions are Person, so their revelation about the dead ‘Person’ was not too specific.

I asked: Is it a Big Person or a Little Person. The Ravens did not respond.

I asked if it was small like a squirrel. One of the Ravens said: No.

I asked if it was big like me. The Raven said: Not that big.

I couldn’t get a visual. I asked what had happened. They said this small Person had fallen off the cliff. I figured there might have been a ledge onto which the ‘Person’ had fallen.

Along that part of the trail I had been getting there were predatory animals just holding their breaths, hoping for one false step and the chance of a meal. So I was wary.

I got that the Ravens on Sandstone Peak Trail depend on Predator kills for a portion of the kill for themselves, and so they have alliances with the Predators there.

In a similar way, the Ravens that soar over my home in the San Fernando Valley have formed an alliance with me, since I leave them small slices of apples and other fruits in the morning.

The alliance of the Ravens with Predators such as Mountain Lions on the Sandstone Peak Trail ran counter to my own desire for safe passage along the trail. Consequently, I chose not to bushwhack up to the crag to find out what ‘Person’ was lying there.

At any rate the Raven told me the ‘Person’ was about one month dead, so there was not that much to be done about it. It might be something for a Ranger to investigate, if they have the inclination to do so.
