Might Malaria Medicines Used for a Week Beginning Day 9 Help Prevent COVID-19 Hospitalizations? . by Alice B. Clagett

Dear Ones,

I note the malaria medicines hydroxychloroquine sulfate and chloroquine phosphate are being used in Latin America, Asia, and Africa to treat COVID-19. But I see it is not approved by the FDA here in the United States for COVID-19?

I note hydroxychloroquine sulfate is approved by the FDA to treat lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. I read that both these diseases have to do with autoimmune disease, which occurs when a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks is or her own body.

I read there is a turning point in COVID-19 at 10 to 12 days, where a person either starts to improve, or else the disease becomes quite serious. Could it be that the determining factor in recovery or serious illness at 10 to 12 days has to do with whether the autoimmune disease kicks in at that point?

If so, then it might be appropriate to use a brief course of hydroxychloroquine sulfate or chloroquine phosphate, starting, say, at day 9, and lasting, say, for a week? Might that help prevent COVID hospitalizations, I wonder?

I was wondering what the future curve of COVID mortality might look like. I found a curve for deaths for the Spanish flu epidemic, which I will attach here. It was ‘W’ shaped, with two small upticks and a big one in the middle …

I see the COVID-19 death curve so far … in a way … resembles the first two upticks of the Spanish flu curve … which is to say, a small uptick, followed after some months by the current, much larger, 3-peaked uptick. That is the red line in this graph …

I thought the future of the curve for COVID deaths might resemble the final small uptick of the Spanish flu mortality curve … in which case we might see a decline in COVID deaths for March and April 2021 or so, and then an uptick lower than the current one, and then with luck, an end to the COVID pandemic.

As to the issue of lack of efficacy of the current COVID vaccines with the new COVID strains, I am not sure that would aversely influence my prediction that the resolution of the COVID mortality chart may occur after only one smaller chart uptick this year. That is because of the placebo effect (or possibly the positive health effect of decreased pathogen load) of vaccines, which might be illustrated as follows …

A vaccine was created for the Spanish flu long years ago, but due to the limitations of microscopic resolution in the early 1900s, the vaccine targeted a bacillus rather than a virus … the bacillus being quite a lot larger than the virus, and thus visible through the microscopy of the day.

Although the ‘Spanish flu vaccine’ did not prevent death through Spanish flu, yet the epidemic in the early 1900s ended after the vaccination campaign.

In the same way, I am guessing … whether through the placebo effect or through an effect of decreased pathogen load (in this case, more narrowly labeled ‘viral load’) … the COVID flu epidemic may end after the COVID vaccination campaign has been fully implemented.

(By the by, it seems to me that for placebo effect or the positive health effect of decreased viral load, the regular flu shot might have worked as well as the COVID vaccine, and might have made a far cheaper and speedier end to the pandemic, had it been promoted as a “COVID plus regular flu” vaccine.)

I note that the medical term for one of the symptoms of both Spanish flu and moderate to severe COVID-19 is ‘prostration’, which means marked loss of strength, or physical exhaustion.

Here is proof from the University of Denver that getting a standard flu shot causes those who catch COVID to have mild symptoms rather than severe symptoms. The proof came from a brand new, exquisitely crafted antibody test developed partly by a Denver company …

I know it is hard to suss out the facts from the linked-to article because it concentrates, as you say, mainly on the antigen test, which is very good news in and of itself. Apparently, the fact that an ordinary, everyday flu shot prevents serious COVID symptoms was just a serendipitous … but amazing … fact the companies involved gleaned during their data analysis.

On the page cited above (which was dated 7 January 2021) it is bullet number 2 in the video title: “Those with flu shots have mild symptoms.”

How could it possibly be that news that good would be bullet number 1? I had to look at the video three times to believe it. Then I looked at the video in the link, and it explained the same thing. At 01:10 in the video the news spokesperson says “In addition to finding distinct antibody profiles that can indicate whether you will exhibit mild symptoms or severe symptoms, they also found that patients who had a flu vaccine in the past year showed more mild symptoms than those who did not get a flu shot …”

I figure the newscaster must have been talking about the common, everyday flu shot from the pharmacy, because COVID vaccines were not available last year.

From a Google search I see that less than half of adults have been getting the ordinary, everyday flu shot each year. To me, what the means is this:

The people who got no flu shot may be among the ones now getting serious symptoms and at risk of dying during COVID. So if those adults got the regular flu shot, they might have a better chance of surviving long enough to eventually get the COVID vaccine in late spring or early summer 2021.

Granted, even mild COVID symptoms are no fun whatsoever. But it is better than kicking the bucket, do you not feel?

I have been following LA Times “Tracking the Coronavirus in California” daily statistics on California COVID deaths, and those have been 500 or 600 deaths daily lately. I gather the risk is real for everyone in California right now …

I wondered if flu shots are available locally now, so I checked online and it looks like I could go to CVS in my local neighborhood and get a shot today, had I not already gotten one in the autumn of 2020. So a temporary, interim remedy is available today.

I searched online for additional newscasts about this startling finding, but could not find any. How could that be, when the news could save the lives of people in our community?

EVERYDAY FLU SHOT MAY DECREASE PATHOGEN LOAD IN THE BODY, ALLOWING IMMUNE SYSTEM TO CONCENTRATE ON FIGHTING COVID-19

This autumn, with the flu season approaching, even though I intuitively felt I had developed pretty strong COVID-19 immunity because of a bout with the new virus in March 2020, I had a concern to keep my COVID immunity strong in the face of the flu season. Intuitively I felt that the standard flu vaccine would help.

Here was my line of reasoning: both COVID-19 and the standard flu are viruses. People tend to get the standard flu in winter, and getting both viruses at the same time might prove quite a test to my immune system. I figured, the fewer pathogens my immune system had to contend with during the flu season, the better off I would be.

So if the standard flu vaccine succeeded in knocking out the one threat, then my immune system would be able to concentrate on overcoming exposure to COVID, even if there appeared more severe strains of COVID, as was the case with deadly second wave of the devastating Spanish influenza epidemic of World War II …

In fact, a more highly infectious strain of COVID has developed in Europe, and is now spreading to other continents. However, so far it seems the standard COVID vaccine may be equally effective with the new strain of COVID, provided enough vaccine doses can be manufactured to keep up with the increased rate of infection.

If there are not enough COVID vaccine doses during spring of 2021, then at least we can make sure to get the standard flu vaccine, and that may prove helpful.

There is inferential corroboration for this notion in the Wikipedia article on Spanish flu cited above. In that article I note that a vaccine was developed for the Spanish flu on the basis of the notion that Haemophilus influenzae, a bacterium, was the cause of the Spanish flu. That was because the virus itself was too small to be detected under a microscope. The bacterium was large enough to be seen microscopically, and was, in fact, seen in many patients.

Interestingly enough, when people back then were inoculated with the vaccine for the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae, though they still became infected with Spanish flu, less people died of it. I gather the cause of the decreased mortality rate may have to do with lessening of people’s pathogen load, so that their immune systems could concentrate on overcoming the Spanish flu viral infections.

That is the same wholistic or ‘additive’ effect of immune system strengthening that may be behind the Denver company’s finding that getting a standard flu vaccine lessens the severity of COVID symptoms in the people who are contracting COVID during the 2020-2021 flu season.

Dear Ones,

When I got what seemed to me to COVID-19 in March 2020, I found that drinking water with buffered Vitamin C powder relieved the COVID symptoms I was experiencing. If you have not yet had COVID, it might be a good idea to have on hand buffered Vitamin C powder, in case that might help relieve your COVID symptoms as well.

Since COVID is a virus, and the flu is a virus as well, it makes sense to me to try over-the-counter flu remedies such as Vitamin C or zinc tablets in case they might help ameliorate COVID symptoms as well.

When I was ill in March 2020, I tried Oscillococcinum and Theraflu as well, but I found both these did not help in my case at all; in fact I felt worse after taking them. From that I gathered, as a working hypothesis, that the simplest flu remedies were the best for me in making my COVID symptoms less devastating.

When a person is that sick, very simple medicines may be the easiest to digest, just as the very simplest clear vegetable broth seemed to be all that I could digest at that time. For more on diet and COVID symptoms see …

This article sets to rest the urban legend that China developed COVID-19 as a germ warfare technique, and that China had given its citizens an antidote it developed, with intent to overthrow the Western world, If all this had been true, then China would surely not need 100 million doses of the vaccine, do you not agree?

COVID is a difficult health challenge for the world, I know. But looked at in another light, it may have the seeds of blessings for humankind in it as well. For instance, the reality that the whole world is facing the same health challenge together may help the nations of Earth work more harmoniously together both now and in future.

In every storm there is a silver lining, as the old saying goes. In these stormy times, I feel it is good to spot that silver lining, and know that though there may be darkness all around, still good may come of it.
