It was just pouring down raining today … absolutely pouring. It’s amazing. I have to show you …

[shows image of spring greenery] This is the new Spring growth. I see here horehound, White Horehound (Marrubium vulgare). ‘Hore’ means ‘white’. It is used as a flavoring in candies.

[shows new growth with prickly edges] This one here, the one with the little prickles … I am right sure it is not edible, but I am not sure what it is. There is quite a bit of it here. It might be the seeds of Cliff Aster (Malacothrix saxatilis) turning into new seedlings.

I am right sure that someone expert in wild plants of the Santa Monica Mountains tried this and got right sick from it. Either they were throwing up or else they got diarrhea. Something bad happened. Was it the cooked root that they tried? They thought it was something else and the tried it. It is definitely not the thing to do. That is what I heard on the trail.

[Shows another Cliff Aster.] There is another specimen. The leaves are almost like swords or daggers.

[Shows how water runoff has stripped soil from the trail.] The trails must have turned into streams of water here. Would you not say? The trail is just like this, all carved out of the dirt.

I can hear a watercourse down on the far side of this hill here. [Shows swing hanging from the limb of a big oak tree.] Thank goodness the swing is still here … and the tree.

[Walks to downward incline behind the tree. There is a sound of water running furiously below.] Oh, my goodness! Let’s get a closer look.

[Shows washed out path.] This road leads down to a creek crossing. Although I am wearing my long boots, I am really sure that I am not going to get across that creek today.

I can hear it, but I cannot quite see it yet.

Earlier today this path was a watercourse. Can you envision it? [Near where the trail meets the creek:] Wow! The trail was a waterfall down here. Now it is just a footpath.

I made it down to the stream crossing. It almost never has any water in it. But it is rip-roaring right now. I’ll show you.

[Shows water rushing across the footpath.] That is a stream crossing.

[Shows stream to left of stream crossing.] There is a waterfall over there. Cool, isn’t it! Absolutely!
