A walk in the way so wet mountains between rains …

Well, there has been a big storm. It seems like a month now that it has been storming. Today was spectacular for that. The mountains are so wet! It is incredible.

I forgot what wet was. We will see what happens.

Everything is so green! The black mustard is coming up, and it is really tasty. It is kind of hairy, but it is absolutely delightful when it is really, really young. And the filaree is coming up too. That is edible when it is really, really young.

I thought I would show you … Here is some black mustard [zooms in], very, very young. It looks tasty, does it not?

And here is some filaree. That is also edible at this stage. When it gets older you have to cook it and chop it. (Be careful not to eat wild foods without asking a wild food expert about it on the trail.)

Here you go again [zooms in towards small plants beside the trail] … nearly 100% edible stuff. Yum!

Oh my gosh! There is an impediment! I cannot get across! I am going to have to go back and take a detour. Look at this! [shows muddy little stream running across the trail]. Muddy water goes down this way … Here is the trail … totally impossible.

[Image of lichen] Look at that! The lichen is liking the rain.

This is manzanita [shows same] … relatively rare in these parts … plenty of it up north though. It is looking good with the rain. It had been very stressed.

It is amazing. There is a mist in the air that is rising up off of the chaparral, and the Sun is out … briefly, no doubt. I will show you. [shows sun shining through clouds, and a mist in the air] There is the Sun. I hope that took it in. And here is the chaparral. It had the strangest look to it, as if there were mist on top.

This is California Peony, still in a very young stage …

There is another stand just to the left here. It dies every year during the summer, and now it has come back. Wow! Has it ever come back! Looks good, huh? Beautiful! [shows closeup of green leaves, whose edges are tinged with maroon] [shows creek flowing through mountain gorge] The creek flows down through the gorge here … kind of a gorge. You can see that it is really full of water. The best shot is down here … [pans to far sight of roiling muddy water rushing through the gorge]

Look! [pans up to rain cloud over the mountain] It has decided to rain again, I think. Lord knows what is going to happen next.

[closeup of the author] Well, I made it almost down to the Faerie Dell, and then … would you not know it! … it started to rain. So I paused at the entrance there, where small oak trees provided some protection against the elements, and I weatherproofed my pack and myself.

Anyway, what I have noticed in the last two years … and I am sure you have noticed too … is that there are no more nature spirits to be seen down in the Faerie Dell.

I guess that proves the old notion that nature spirits are very leery of human beings and the sounds that they have. They like it very, very quiet, secluded … like that, I think.

And so, I need to cross this one off my list and go on to some place where it is really, really quiet. Sorry it is not today, but one day soon we will see those nature spirits again!

Here I am, way up in the highlands. People are so different from nature spirits, are they not? It is amazing, really. I recall some of the best nature spirit experiences I have had are in places very far away from humankind. They seem to rollick around then. It is really a gas. It is a lot of fun. Hope you spot one or two this year.
