INTRODUCTION

Dear Ones,

Here is a video about Red-Breasted House Finches, which are right sassy Songbirds, I feel.

The Summary after the video has shorts with interpretations of the things the House Finches said to me, to each other, or to the Raven, who thought this interlude quite funny.

Red-Breasted House Finches: Cherries or Oranges? Cherries or Oranges?
By Alice B. Clagett

Hello, Dear Ones. It’s Alice. I Am of the Stars.

I have a quick story to tell you. It is pretty funny and it touches my heart. It is about the red-breasted House Finches in the backyard here in the San Fernando Valley, California.

Today I found an orange and some cherries in my refrigerator. The orange had a soft bottom; that usually means mold has set in. So I cut it in half, threw away the bad half, and then cut the top half into sections, and washed the cherries and took everything outside for the Songbirds, right?

So I explained to the Songbirds that the oranges smelled a little funny and that they might not be good for them; but that the cherries were just fine; and that they had to be careful to eat the right thing.

And they [the Songbirds] were discussing this together. You know? First to land where I had put the fruit were the Red-Breasted House Finches. One Red-Breasted Finch right away went to the cherries, and it said: Cherries or oranges? Cherries or oranges? I have to decide what is the best thing! … Cherries! I want cherries! And so it went to the cherries immediately.

Another Red-Breasted Finch took up that …

1. Wren Tit says: We-e-e-e were TALK-ing to her!

[Alice to Readers: There was a Wren Tit hiding in the bougainvillea to my right. It made a piercing sound in my ear. I am laughing at this.]

Alice to Readers: … took up that chorus …

House Finch: Cherries or oranges? Cherries or oranges? I HAVE to make the right decision.

Alice to Readers: … and it would hop back and forth. Finally it tasted a little of the orange, and it said …

House Finch: Oh that’s GOOD. THANK you very MUCH! Oh that’s GOOD. Right?

Alice to Readers: Then it hopped over to the cherry. It could not make up its mind. It was really funny. They were really pleased. The very first thing that happened was they took the cherries and dropped them onto the pavement. And I think that … I am going to go look. I’m going to go see what is left now. Ok, let’s see.

. . . . .

Alice to Readers: It is kind of like they were in the supermarket and they were wowed by the variety. But it does not take much for the Songbirds. Two choices are plenty, it seems. Let’s go see …

. . . . .

Alice to Readers: OK, here we are. Let’s see what’s happening …

  1. House Finch: DEAR me! Please stop CHER-ries. CHER-ries don’t taste good.

Alice to Readers: Oh my gosh, look at this …

  1. Raven: STOP talking!

Alice to Readers: … Looks like they like those cherries after all. And what do you know? …

  1. House Finch: GOOD MOR-R-R-ning, Sleepy Face!

Alice to Readers: … all the cherries are gone!

  1. House Finch: SHE-E-E did not like ‘Sleepy Face’. Dear me! Dear me! Dear me!

Alice to Readers: … Yep! Every cherry is gone. [Not true, there were a couple more cherries behind some of the orange sections.]

  1. House Finch (trying to make everything all ok): THANK you. Thank you. Very good.

Alice to Readers: Yummy!

  1. House Finch: She did like ‘THAN-N-N-K you’.

Alice to Readers: And I guess you just heart the Raven warns the Songbirds about the Hawk. There is a Hawk about, somewhere.

  1. House Finch: Dear-r-r me. Where is this … Another House Finch (interrupting): She sees this Hawk.

Alice to Readers: They cannot hear the Hawk, but the Raven can, and he always warns.

  1. House Finch: She sees a Hawk.

Alice to Readers: I hope you like this story …

  1. Another House Finch: Great God, where is this Hawk?

Alice to Readers: … Cherries and oranges. [Expression of surprise] I found a cherry!

  1. House Finch: Jeeo! She found a cher-RY?

12, House Finch: !! Where IS the cherry?

13. House Finch: Here. Right here.

14. Another House Finch: !! Where IS it?

15. Another House Finch: See this – It’s here. [Or: Jesus, It’s here!]

16. House Finch: Where? Another House Finch: Right here.

17. House Finch: YES! THER-R-R-E it is. Another House Finch: I S-S-S-SEE.

Alice to House Finches: Cherry or orange?

  1. House Finch: CHER-ries. Yes-yes-yes.

Alice to House Finches: That’s a good question.

  1. House Finch (hushed voice): Right.

Alice to House Finches: Cherries or oranges?

  1. Raven (from afar): Ha, ha!

Alice to herself: Suppose I had five things?

  1. House Finch (maybe miffed with Raven): CHER-R-R-R-ies-s-s!

22. Another House Finch: What?

Alice to herself: Wow, what a choice that would be!

  1. House Finch (speaking shortly): I said cher-r-r-ries.

  1. Raven (very amused now): HA, HA, HA!

25. House Finch: What’s so funny?

. . . . .

  1. House Finch: SHE-E-E’s getting ready to LEAVE.

27. House Finch (very polite): We really THANK you.

28. Another House Finch (very polite): YES YES YES YES! We really THANK you.

Alice to Readers:

God bless you all,
And keep you safe,
And be with you
Through all your days.

Alice to Readers: See you there!

Alice to House Finches: What? What?

  1. House Finch (hushed voice): What IS it? Another House Finch (simultaneously, louder): What IS your-your-your WEb-site?

Alice to House Finches: What?

  1. House Finch (hushed): We don’t know what you are talking about. Another House Finch (louder): What IS IS IS this website?

Alice to House Finches: I can’t understand! What … what … what’s going on?

  1. House Finch: SHE-E-E’s so funny!
