Written and published on 22 May 2020; updated on 19 June 2020

[As of 19 June 2020 the death rate for California, using the below source updated, is 5,355 California COVID-19 deaths / 39,510,000 California population x 100 (to get percent) = 0.014 percent California COVID-19 death rate for 2020 to date. That is to say, COVID-19 deaths for California for 2020 to date are still one hundred times less than about 1 percent of the population.]

Dear Ones,

I crunched the numbers, and found the total COVID-19 deaths in California for 2020 to date to be much less than I thought..

There have been 3,609 California COVID-19 deaths to date …

39,510,000 population of California, per Google

Here is my calculation ..

3,609 California COVID-19 deaths / 39,510,000 California population x 100 (to get percent)  = .009 percent California COVID-19 death rate for 2020 to date.

That is to say, COVID-19 deaths for California for 2020 to date are one hundred times less than about 1 percent of the population.

The same formula can be used to determine the death rate for other states, by plugging in the numbers from this New York Times article …
