INTRODUCTION

Dear Ones,

In this video I was making sure that the San Fernando Valley was not being threatened by the Franklin Fire that started in Malibu.

I got to Mulholland Highway at Las Virgenes Road and found the police had blocked westerly access on Las Virgenes Road at that point. Nanday parakeets in the trees near the police vehicle warned me emphatically not to go that way.

From the traffic southbound on Mulholland Highway I gathered that might have been an emergency vehicle route during the Franklin Fire.

I had a talk with a bird that called itself a shrike while I was walking along Mulholland Highway. I don’t know if it really was a shrike. I saw an Acorn Woodpecker, but it seemed the Nandays had flown away before I could question them.

Just before all that, I had stopped by the National Park Headquarters at King Gillette Ranch, which is across the road. It seemed to me that might have been a rest stop for emergency vehicles that were dealing with the Franklin Fire.

There is a Summary after the video …

SUMMARY OF THE VIDEO

“Nanday – Shrike – Woodpecker Talk: Franklin Fire – 12 December 2024”
By Alice B. Clagett

Alice to Nandays: Nanday, Nanday! … Nanday, Nanday, Nanday!

Alice to Readers: I’m at Mulholland and Las Virgenes and the road is blocked here because of the Malibu fire and there’s a police car over there.

[CAPTION: The police car was blocking Las Virgenes Road south, preventing access to the ocean.]

Alice to Readers: But the Nandays are … there is a bunch of Nandays around there, and I started to go the other way, but the Nandays were just going on about … [they] said, “Fire! Don’t go that way!”

Alice to Readers: They were very informative. [Coughs.]

[CAPTION: There is a little smoke in the air that is irritating my throat.]

Alice to Readers: I’m going to try to sneak up here and talk to them [the Nandays] even though the policeman is here. So probably I won’t accomplish my goal. But we’ll see.

Alice to Nandays: Where’s the Nandays? Where’s the Nandays there?

A Bird says: Shrike!

Alice to Bird: Shrike!

The Bird says: Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep.

‘Shrike’ to Alice (speaking for Nandays): I’m RIGHT over there.

[CAPTION: I don’t know if this bird is a Shrike, or just pretending to be a Shrike.]

Alice to Nandays: Nanday, Nanday!

Alice to Nandays: Nanday, Nanday! … What’s up?

Alice to Nandays: I love you! … Nanday? … Nanday! [coughs from smoke irritation]

Alice to ‘Shrike’: Shrike!

[‘Shrike’ looks at her.]

Alice to ‘Shrike’: Shrike?

Alice to ‘Shrike’: Where are you? … Where are you?

Alice to Woodpecker: Woodpecker!

[Shows Acorn Woodpecker.]

[Shows Acorn Woodpecker.]

Coyotes (prompting the Woodpecker): I am a Woodpecker. I am a Woodpecker.

Alice to ‘Shrike’: “Shrike’, What IS that?

Coyotes (prompting Woodpecker): I am a Woodpecker. I am a Woodpecker.

Coyote to himself: He doesn’t understand.

[Woodpeckers are not strong on vocal speak. They are Passerines, not Songbirds.]

Acorn Woodpecker to Alice: Pecker, Pecker, Pecker, Pecker!

‘Shrike’ to Acorn Woodpecker (interrupting): Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep.

Acorn Woodpecker to Alice (continuing): … Pecker, Pecker!

Another ‘Shrike to Acorn Woodpecker: Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep. Yep, yep, yep, yep.

Another Acorn Woodpecker: Pecker, Pecker, Pecker, Pecker, Pecker, Pecker.

Alice to Acorn Woodpecker: Ok.

Alice to ‘Shrike’: Where did you go?

Alice to Readers: They’re gone. The Nandays are gone.

Alice to Readers: There is a lot of traffic. I think this is an emergency route down Mulholland.[Highway].

Alice to Readers: Darn!

Alice to Nandays: Nanday!

A Songbird says: Nandays were here but they are gone now.

Alice to Songbird: Are you ok?

Alice to Nandays: Nanday!

A Songbird says: Nandays were here but they are gone now.

Alice to Songbird: Are you ok?

Songbird to Alice: Yep. We are ok.

Alice to Songbird: Oh, good!

Songbird to Alice: Thank you for asking that.

Alice to Songbird: Are you ok?

‘Shrike’ to Alice: Yep!

First Songbird to Alice: Yep.

Alice to Songbirds: Where did the … Where did the Nandays go?

Songbird to Alice: They went off somewhere else.

Alice to Songbird: Oh, Thank you.

Alice to Readers: They went THIS way … back THIS way, they said.

Alice to Songbirds: Where ARE they? They’re GONE.

Songbird to Alice: That’s IT.

Alice to Songbirds: Nandays are gone.
