Our human breath naturally subconsciously alternates between the left nostril and the right nostril during the day. A small scientific study has reported the interval for coursing of the breath through one nostril as being about 2 hours while waking … and about 4 and a half hours while sleeping.

Conscious Alternation of the Breath from Nostril to Nostril
Rather than waiting 2 to 4 hours to attain a balance of ida and pingala, we can consciously switch to left nostril breathing or to right nostril breathing. We can consciously change the operation of the autonomic nervous system … and the subconscious mind … by practicing left-nostril or right-nostril breathing, as described below. These techniques I find to be a sure way to deal with solstice and equinoctial energies, and with solar wind gusts and geostorms.
I have but one caveat: Only try these yogic breathing practices on your medical doctor’s advice …

How to Do Left-Nostril Breathing
Left-nostril breathing has a calming relaxing effect. It is easily practiced, even by a novice to the science of yoga.

While first learning left-nostril breathing, use the thumb of the right hand to close off the right nostril. The mouth is also closed. This forces the breath through the left nostril. The other fingers of the right hand are pointed up, like antennae.
After a while, I found it was possible to switch to left-nostril breathing by simply placing my Awareness on the left nostril, and feeling the breath there. The hand pose was no longer needed.

How to Do Right-Nostril Breathing
Right-nostril breathing has an energizing effect. Thus it inhibits the freeze response, and also I feel, the fawn response and the flop response. It is practiced like this …

Long Deep Breathing Helps Us Judge Whether to Do Left-Nostril Breathing or Right-Nostril Breathing When We Are in Danger During a Solar Event
Alice B. Clagett: When the breath becomes long and deep, the feelings of a person facing stressful events become less involved in the outcome. The person becomes the neutral witness of the events that are unfolding. This is the yogic state known as ‘neutral mind’.
I advise practicing Long Deep Breathing all day long. I have found that this breathing technique helps me judge whether to switch to right-nostril breathing or to left-nostril breathing when danger looms during a Solar event. Long deep breathing can help me gain that extra instant in which I am able consciously to decide on a right course of action.

It could be, for instance, that I might have a notion of ‘acting out’ during a Solar event. Long deep breathing can help me decide that left-nostril breathing will help me avoid acting out. In that way it can help me inhibit my own fight-or-flight response.

It might also be that, while doing long deep breathing, I notice other people ‘acting out’ or in danger of ‘acting out’. Long deep breathing can help me decide that right-nostril breathing will help me to safely get away from these people before they begin to ‘act out’. In that way long deep breathing can help me inhibit my own freeze, fawn, and flop responses.
