INTRODUCTION

Dear Ones,

Here is a big to-do amongst the birds: What ARE those animals? LISTEN AT HIGHEST POSSIBLE VOLUME so as to hear the birds and mammals as they speak what is in the captions.

Fasten your seatbelts! A few surprises are in store, so hang in there, and take this little trek into the unknown with me! There are two surprises at the very end of the film – a psychic impression (well, ok, maybe it’s that) and Mr. Raven finally reveals himself.

VIDEO BY ALICE

SUMMARY OF THE VIDEO
When I did the transcript it seemed to me I had left out of the video captions some of the birds’ conversation. That is why there is more talk in the transcript than in the video.

Alice to Readers: Something is underway!

Raven: Caw Caw!

Alice: Rabbit!?

Raven: Caw Caw Caw! [Co-yo-tay]

Woodpecker: That’s it. It’s a Coyote.

Raven: Caw Caw Caw! [Co-yo-tay!]

Hawk [shrilly]: Yep. Co-yo-tay, Co-yo-tay, Co-yo-tay, Co-yo-tay.

Alice: Thank you. [I cannot figure out what they are saying.]

. . . . .

Alice: It’s the Rabbits!?

Scrub Jay: Not the Rabbit. Not the Rabbit. The Rabbit is NOT what it IS!

Alice: What is it? Is it a Fox?

Scrub Jay: Not a Rabbit. A Fox. Great big, mean #@%! Fox.

Alice: Where IS this Fox?

Laughing Bird: Ha, ha! SHE thinks it’s a RAB-bit!

Alice [looking into a dry streambed]: Down here there is a Fox’s den? Mean Foxes down there? … Do they hurt people?

Bird [hushed, fluting sound]: No, no! They won’t hurt people.

Scrub Jay 1 conversing: Let’s say it’s a Rabbit.

Scrub Jay 2: Why would we do THAT?

Scrub Jay 1: She might get up-SET if we say that it’s a FOX!

Alice: Goodness gracious! [starts walking] … Thank you for TALK-ing. Thank you very much! [skirting round a mud puddle] …

Scrub Jay 1: She’s THANK-ing us.

Scrub Jay 2: WHAT?

Alice: Kind of WET here.

Scrub Jay: Right!

Alice: Very, very WET!

Scrub Jay: Right! VERY, very WET! WET!

Alice: Goodness GRA-cious!

Scrub Jay 1: WET! Wet. Right, wet.

Scrub Jay 2: She THANKED us very MUCH.

Scrub Jay 1: Right. OH-kay.

. . . . .

First Scrub Jay: Real, real, real, real, VERY big, real, real Rabbit.

Second Scrub Jay: RIGHT! … Right. Right … REAL BIG.

Scrub Jay: GREAT, GREAT BIG Rabbit!

Raven [quietly]: NOT a RAB-bit!

Scrub Jay [embarrassed]: WHAT?! NOT a RAB-bit?

Raven [quietly]: NOT a RAB-bit!

Scrub Jay [embarrassed, caught out for fibbing]: WHAT?! NOT a RAB-bit?

Tiny Bird with high voice: He said it’s not a Rabbit.

Scrub Jay: Rabbit! Right, RIGHT! … BIG RABBIT.

Raven [very faint]: Not Rabbit. It’s a Fox.

Tiny Bird with high voice: He said it’s not a Rabbit.

Scrub Jay: Rabbit! Right, RIGHT! … BIG RABBIT.

Raven [very faint]: Not Rabbit. It’s a Fox.

Alice to Readers: What IS this animal? Can you hear the Woodpeckers? They are in favor of Rabbit.

They note that Raven favors Fox.

Scrub Jay comments: Right … Right … Right … GREAT BIG RAB-bit.

Alice: What?

First Scrub Jay: Real, real, real, real, real, real big!

Second Scrub Jay: Right, right, right! Great big, very mean RAB-bit!

. . . . .

What with greeting fellow hikers, and avoiding an illegal camper who is skulking about while hidden who knows where in the underbrush, and what with the canty calls of many keyed-up Blue Avian Star Beings, I am beginning to get the hint. Something is up! What could it be?

. . . . .

Mystery Animal is barking and howling loudly about 50 feet away. It sounds like a dog, but it doesn’t LOOK like a dog. Erring on the side of caution, I zoom in with the camcorder rather than moving closer to the commotion.

Alice [walking along the trail]: What WAS that?

Narrative (in italics)

I was going along here, in Cheseboro Canyon, and the Raven made a sound. It sounded like a Rattlesnake rattling. I asked: Is it a Rattlesnake? And the Raven said: Fox! Fox!

. . .

Raven [quite put out]: Not a Fox! NOT a Fox!

Songbird [tweeting]: What IS it?

Scrub Jay: @#%! What IS it?

Raven: STOP THAT!

Alice to Readers: I am getting close to the place [where that happened].

Raven [quite put out]: CA-YO-TAY not Fox. CA-YO-TAY not Fox. Stop that.

Narrative (continued)

Alice to Readers: And the Woodpeckers agreed. They said it a little differently. In Woodpecker dialect they said: Fox!

And I said: Well, is the Fox so mean?

And the Raven said: Lots of Foxes there … very mean Foxes. They will tear you limb from limb [and I got a visual image of a Raven’s wing being torn off].

I was thinking: This can’t be so! Can this possibly be so?

And then I saw two creatures when I was out that-away [points back farther on the trail]. I do not know what they are. One looked like a Coyote and one was red like a Fox.

. . . . .

Technical Note

When I use the camcorder zoom the viewfinder zoom is so small and indistinct that I cannot tell, while on ‘dirt time’, what I have captured in the video. On the way back to the trailhead I am just describing what I could distinguish about the animals through the underbrush at a distance of 50 feet.

Later when I viewed the video on my Movie Maker application, it looked to me that they were two Coyotes, one reddish and one grey-brown. Then I thought maybe the forest creatures thought the reddish Coyote was a fox because of its unusual color. I looked online and found that Coyotes can be very varied, including tan, gray, black, and reddish-brown. A red blonde coyote, while unusual in my own observational experience, is thus clearly not beyond the realm of possibility.

. . . . .

Narrative [continued)

Alice to Readers: I asked: Is that a Coyote? Is that a Fox?

One Raven said: Coyote! And the other Raven said: Fox!

And one of the Birds asked: Is it Coyote? … Is it Fox?

And Big Raven said: FOX!

. . .

Alice to Readers: I’m getting close [to the place where a Raven made the Rattlesnake sound].

Raven is talking.

Alice to Raven: Fox? … Fox already? … Back there?

Alice sees a Songbird on a log by the trail. As the Songbird flies off she says: SWEET Bird! SWEET Bird!

Songbird [tentatively, in a very quiet voice]: SWEET Bird. SWEET Bird.

Alice: SWEET Bird!

Nearby Songbird: Sweet, SWEET Bird! [and a trill]

Alice to Songbird: That’s right. Sweet, SWEET Bird! …

Songbird [tentatively, in a very quiet voice]: SWEET Bird. SWEET Bird.

Alice: SWEET Bird!

Songbird [tentatively, in a very quiet voice]: SWEET Bird.

Alice: Sweet Bird, I love YOU!

Nearby Songbird: Sweet, SWEET Bird! [Very quietly]: PLEASE don’t talk to my babies. You’ll WAKE them!

[What I thought might be Songbird babies, or maybe just very shy Songbirds, have been repeating ‘Sweet, Sweet Bird’ in very very quiet voices. I don’t know if you could hear them.]

Alice: OK.

Nearby Songbird: Sweet, SWEET Ehhh!

Alice: I love YOU!

Alice to Readers: ‘Don’t scare my babies’. That is what it said twice. [I realize this may be the wrong nesting season. Maybe this the Songbirds are making a joke, just as the Scrub Jays did?]

Raven is scolding.

Alice: Ok, ok, I’m leaving. Bye-bye … Bye-bye.

Songbird: Sweet, SWEET Bird!

[A big Raven to-do is going on …]

First Raven: CA-YO-TAY  NOT FOX! NOT FOX!

Alice: Yes, please, don’t shout at me.

Second Raven: NOT FOX! NOT FOX! NOT FOX! NOT FOX! NOT FOX! NOT FOX!

Alice [in between the lines]: What? … I KNOW ..

Alice: FIVE Foxes! Oh, no!

[Alice, Have you ears to hear?]

Raven: Oh NO!

Alice [looking down into the dry creek bed]: DOWN THERE!

Hawk [shouting]: She CAN’T HEAR YOU!

Alice to Readers: Can you hear them? Can you figure out what they’re saying? … I’m trying to find the very MEAN foxes …

Alice to Ravens: BIG Foxes?

Raven [shouting]: CO-YO-TAY NOT FOX.

Alice to Raven: Very big Fox?

Raven [toning it down, as if exhausted with trying to get this across to me]: No, not Fox.

Alice to Raven: One? ONE Fox? Fox?

Hawk [keening loudly]: NOT A FOX. CA-YO-TAY! NOT A FOX. CA-YO-TAY!

Raven [interrupting, really annoyed]: NOT A FOX! NOT A FOX! NOT A FOX!

Alice: Fox Fox Fox Fox Fox Fox?

Hawk: DEAR Me!

Alice: Oh, NO!

Alice to Readers: I’m going over here. I’m scared of those Foxes.

Raven: NOT A FOX. CA-YO-TAY! NOT FOX.

Coyote [sly, jaunty, very sotto voce]: And they will eat you up. And they might really eat you up.

Alice: Eat me up?

Coyote: Um hum.

Raven to Coyote: STOP that!

Alice to Coyote [suddenly alert]: EAT me UP?!

Raven [shouting]: STOP THAT RIGHT NOW. EAT NOT!

Hawk: EAT-HER, EAT-HER, EAT-HER, EAT-HER, EAT-HER, EAT-HER, EAT-HER!

Alice: Wow, look at the Sun!

Raven [shouting]: EAT HER NOT UP NOT UP!

Woodpecker [chuckling]: Do-not-eat-her-Raven. Ha ha ha ha ha!

Alice to Readers: I can’t find that Raven. I don’t know where it is.

Raven [shouting]: I’m up here, up here, up here, up here, up here! Hawk, hawk, hawk, hawk! (etc)

Hawk [shouting]: Here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here. (etc)

A Man is talking. Could this be a psychic impression overlay?

The man sounds a little like Coyote in tone, but much more audible.

Alice: Hawk! Hawk!

[Here is Raven!]

Raven: Hawk, Hawk, Hawk, Hawk, Hawk, Hawk!
