Crime Alert: Check Your Yard for Spyware Set by Burglary Tourists in Los Angeles

Crime Tips

Dear Ones,

This morning I read an interesting article about a spy camera disguised as an ivy leaf …

Link: “LA County Neighborhood Rattled by Hidden Flowerbed Camera,” by Paige Austen, 30 May 2024, in Patch.com for Los Angeles … https://patch.com/california/los-angeles/la-county-neighborhood-rattled-hidden-flowerbed-camera ..

The spy camera was found in an upscale yard in Los Angeles. Someone sighted a suspect driving in the area and apprehended him. They found dirt disturbed in a planter, and figured a ring of burglars was using the spyware to find out when the homeowners might be away from home, so they could break in undisturbed.

The police also found a hard hat and a vest, which they figured might be worn by the thieves to allay suspicion as they approach a house they intend to rob.

Considering these facts, what course of action ought homeowners in Los Angeles take?

Check our ivy plants for surveillance cameras disguised as ivy leaves? Check for solar battery. If it is regular battery, then it will need to be replaced from time to time, so notice who has access to ivy in your yard.

How about this?: REMOVE ivy in your yard!

In a similar vein: Who has access to the software that displays your security camera images on your handheld? What country is the software company located in? Does that country’s Department of Defense have access to cameras in your front and back yards?

If that country is territorially aggressive, to whom would they give access to the software?

  • To Realtors in the United States?
  • To criminals in the US?
  • To ‘burglary tourists’ from other countries, such as the South American Theft Gangs mentioned in the Patch.com article?

If the latter, then the ivy camera in the article is a way for them to get images of your front and back yards should surveillance camera access be unavailable.

This may sound daunting, but much can be done to deter would-be thieves.
