On 6 March 2020 I checked the New York Times statistics (you have to create an account, either free or paid, in order to view the article) on Coronavirus cases within the United States …

As of that date, he New York Times indicated 227 people with the coronavirus have been treated in the United States. Twenty-one states were involved, and 14 patients had died. It averred that infection was being spread within the United States, and not just through travel to other countries.
The WHO statistics for 5 March 2020 were less timely, but supportive of the New York Times report. As of 5 March 2020, WHO confirmed 129 cases in the United States (of these 21 were new cases as of 5 March 2020); and nine total deaths as of 5 March 2020 (three of which occurred on 5 March 2020). This statistical source also indicated local transmission within the United States was then occurring.
