Ay Caramba! Ay Caramba!

I started teaching the birds ‘Ay Caramba!’. I was having some success, and I thought I would record it. And then none of the birds wanted to say ‘Ay Caramba!’ anymore.

I was walking along, trying this group of birds and that. No luck! Then I walked under an old oak tree. Ay Caramba! What a big surprise! I ran into a Rattlesnake. In fact, it almost got me. While I was saying ‘Ay Caramba!’ it skittered off over to the left, alongside the trail.

It’s a very feisty Rattlesnake. There is its tail. [Shows tail rattling.] I think it might bite me if I continue along the trail.

[Loud rattling noise.] Look! Ay Caramba!

Alice to Readers: Does that Rattlesnake look mean!

Alice to Readers: Look! [shows image of Rattlesnake with forked tongue flashing and tail rattling.] Does that Rattlesnake look mean!

Alice to Rattlesnake: Dude! Dude! I have to get past here. Ok? Ok? You don’t mind, do you? [I am sidling past the Rattlesnake.] Don’t get angry! Don’t get angry! Don’t get angry! I’m leaving.

Rattlesnake to Alice [sounds like the wind whistling through dry grass]: God, I HATE you. God, I HATE you.

Owl to Rattlesnake [Owl’s voice is deep and compassionate and wise]: Do not strike her. She is walking away.

Alice to Readers: Whew! A patient Rattlesnake!

Rattlesnake, feeling put upon, talking to himself: Good. She is leaving me alone now. Thank goodness for that.

Alice to Readers: [turning camcorder to view her image] Yikes! Whoa! [Camcorder shows a ray of Light above my head and diamond-shaped nature spirits around my head.] Protected by Light! Thank goodness! Oh, goodness! What a scary encounter! Whew!

Rattlesnake to himself: I’ll be. Nature Spirits are helping her to stay safe.

Alice to Rattlesnake: Ay Caramba! Ay Caramba! Don’t hurt me!

Alice to Readers: I’m doing my best. Look! Nature spirits all around!

Owl to himself [softly, quietly]: I’ll be, also.

Alice to Readers [Walking along the trail …]: I’ll just keep an eye out now. No more ‘Ay Caramba!’ right now. Maybe it’s the mating season. I have to be very careful.
