Dear Ones,

A Sensitive must somehow make her way in the world … but how?

If she sells an apparition, and that willful being fails to manifest, then what?

For the sake of her hungry children, the impoverished Sensitive is ineluctably drawn to charlatanry. I can imagine this may be so.

Yet when the apparition truly manifests, the spoken truth may prove quite inconvenient. None can see but the Sensitive. What is she to do?

I asked Google AI: What does the School of Theosophy say about seances?

I agree completely with Google AI’s response.

Google AI said: “The School of Theosophy, and Theosophy in general, takes a critical and cautious stance on séances, cautioning that the entities contacted are generally not the actual deceased individuals but rather their “astral shells” or lower, potentially deceptive, elementals. The practice of holding séances is generally discouraged as a result of these perceived dangers and limitations.

Key Theosophical perspectives on séances include:

  • Contact with Astral Shells: Theosophical teaching explains that after death, a person sheds their physical and then “astral” body (the linga sharira and kama rupa). What remains on the astral plane are these “shells,” which retain the individual’s lower memories and personality traits but lack their higher spiritual intelligence (Manas, Buddhi, Atman). It is these empty shells, or sometimes lower, mischievous elemental spirits, that are typically encountered in séances.
  • Dangers of the Practice: Theosophists, including Helena Blavatsky, argued that engaging with these lower entities can be dangerous, potentially attracting negative influences or resulting in “horse-play” and disturbances, as described in detailed accounts by early Theosophists who investigated the phenomena. It is considered a form of black magic to “galvanize” the ethereal corpse into an artificial life for a short period after death.
  • Misinterpretation of Phenomena: While acknowledging that genuine physical phenomena (raps, moving objects, automatic writing) can occur during séances due to real, albeit misunderstood, forces, Theosophy teaches that these manifestations do not provide a true understanding of life after death.
  • Focus on Inner Work: Instead of seeking external phenomena through mediumship, Theosophy encourages individuals to pursue a more strenuous spiritual discipline through the development of one’s own latent spiritual powers, intuition, and meditation to gain direct contact with a deeper spiritual reality. This inner work is seen as the proper path to true wisdom and spiritual growth, rather than relying on external psychicism, which is seen as a lower form of study.
  • Colored Communications: Any communication received through a medium is likely to be heavily influenced and colored by the medium’s own personality, knowledge, and level of advancement, making reliable, objective information from the true “higher self” of a deceased person nearly impossible to obtain in this manner.”
