Alice to Readers: Now, this bird’s name is Fair Rose of the Valley. Look at that. Fair Rose of the Valley. And if it’s a boy bird, then it’s going to be named …

Alice to Peace Dove: Would you like Christopher? Is that a good name? You like Hermes better? Hermes. Wants to be called Hermes.

Alice to Readers: And if you were to look right there [at the bands on its legs], you’d find out it’s a Peace Release Dove that didn’t go home.

Alice to Hermes: Right? Well, what do you say? Is that good enough? You want your food now? Okay. You’re going to fly up. You want your food? Okay.

Alice to Hermes: You want to stretch your wings? Fair Rose! Hermes?

Alice to Hermes: Hermes?

Alice to Hermes: Okay. Hermes it is … messenger of the gods.
Hermes [‘beak talk’ (in human terms, ‘lip talk’)] to Alice: Yep, yep, yep. I do like that.

Hermes [subvocal speech] to Alice: I do believe that one’s just right for me.
Alice to Hermes: That one’s just right for you? Did you say that?

Hermes [head nod] to Alice: Um hum.

Hermes [subvocal speech] to Alice: Are you going to take a picture of me?

Alice to Hermes: I’ve taken a picture of you.
Hermes [beak talk] to Alice: I believe I WOULD like that.

Hermes [head nod] to Alice: Yep, I would.
Hermes [subvocal speech] to Alice: That was the name my Mother gave me.
Alice to Hermes: That was the name your mother gave you! Okay, Hermes, it is.

Alice to Hermes: I got you mixed up with a lady, and I think you’re a guy.
Hermes [beak talk] to Alice: Yep. Yep.

Alice to Hermes: You’re a guy!
Hermes [beak talk] to Alice: Yep.

Alice to Hermes: I’ll be darned. Well, there you have it. A beautiful White King guy. A guy.
Hermes [beak talk] to Alice: Yep, all right … Yep, okay.

Hermes [subvocal speech] to Alice: By the way, I am a Homing Pigeon and not a White King.

Alice to Readers: As you can tell, Hermes doesn’t talk too much. Sometimes when he gets especially emotional or has something important to say, he talks. But generally speaking, he whispers without saying anything. And you have to figure out what he’s saying. Peace Dove Release talk. Peace Dove Release talk.

Alice to Hermes: And now they know. Okay?
