I just read a quotation from Fisher Professor of Natural History and Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences Andrew H. Knoll in which he speculates that, as we gain more understanding of the origins of life on Earth, we can begin to imagine how life might have arisen on other planets as well …

For example, there is the planet Mars. I am thinking of our Martian Bacterial Colonists of Earth, which arrived here from Mars 3 to 4 billion years ago.

The question is, when did bacteria evolve (probably as extremophiles) on Mars?

Earth is 4.5 billion years old, and Mars is 4.6 billion years old. That would make Mars 100 million years older than Earth. Could it be that the Martian Bacterial Colonists of Earth have a history of existence that is, say, 4.5 billion years old, rather than just 3 to 4 billion years old?

Could it be that the Martian culture was already well advanced when Earth formed, and that they had a very advanced understanding of genetic engineering at that time?

That would make sense, considering the need of their species to quickly evolve so as to survive the harsh and ever-changing environment of Mars. On Mars today, for instance, there are windstorms, lack of surface water, and temperatures range from -220 degrees F. to +70 degrees F. at the poles.

If great species adaptability was crucial to the continued existence of Martians on their home planet, and if they early on, of necessity, attained great skill at altering the genetic makeup of their species, then their genetic engineering feats must put us human completely out of the limelight. What must they think of the current status of our fledgling scientific and medical knowledge? I hesitate to venture a guess!
