  • MECHANICS OF A CORONAL MASS EJECTION (CME)
  • EASTERN AND WESTERN LIMB OF THE SUN

Dear Ones,

This morning I saw Suspicious Observer’s analysis of last night’s M9 solar flare, which produced a coronal mass ejection (CME) that he says is unlikely to impact Earth, because it happened on the Eastern Limb of the Sun.

MECHANICS OF A CORONAL MASS EJECTION (CME)

Notice, at .38 – 1.02 on the video how SO describes the mechanics of a coronal mass ejection, beginning with the phrase “What you should notice …” There he describes umbral field surges [smaller loops of energy above the ‘umbra’, the dark center of the sunspot), how they enhance magnetics of the upper coronal fields (the big loops of energy above the umbra). And ther resultant explosion and reconnection … something he calls ‘repopulation’ of magnetic fields.

EASTERN AND WESTERN LIMB OF THE SUN

As I had not yet gotten the terminology right about the Sun, I looked up this helpful image and explanation …

Image: Sun, showing eastern limb on the left (E), western limb on the right (W), and rotation from left to right … http://www.eyes-on-the-skies.org/shs/spec-rot-gb_files/rotationdoppler.GIF ..

This web page explains the limbs and the rotation, as displayed in the NOAA sun videos, very well …
