On the Road to Carlsbad Caverns

[Video of water sparkling in a rock pool, then a video of a rock overhang] … This overhang here, on the way to Carlsbad Caverns (that I am going to), apparently was used by many different kinds and many generations of Native Americans as shelter.

They found their food in the surrounding area, which looks dry and inhospitable, but in fact, at the proper season, it contains all kinds of plant materials that are good for food, and for making ropes and sandals, and things of that nature. So I am finding out quite a bit here.

I am looking here … [Shows dry ground and roughed up dirt with a dormant walnut tree in it] … and it apparently shows detritus that came down in a flash flood that apparently came down the canyon, and came all the way down to here, leaving stuff in this walnut tree here.

But some times of year, down in this area, water accumulates as a pool; and at other times, it is completely dry. And from what I just saw, obviously the water can get extremely high here. So this overhang … [shows overhang] … would be good shelter, provided there is no flash flood, I think.

But if there is a flash flood, a person would want a quick way to get out of here, especially if they had children, and so forth, to take care of, and maybe animals that were important to their livelihood. That is just what I am thinking about … this really high cliff here … [shows cliff]. Maybe they could climb up the cliff if they had to. I do not know.

Carlsbad Caverns

This is the entrance to the Carlsbad Caverns … [shows entrance] … I am told it goes down 8,000 or 9,000 feet, to a level area. So here I go … [Shows photos of descent into Carlsbad Caverns.] … This is King’s Palace Tour up here; this is just the beginning of it, I guess.
